Just short of one month ago, COVERGIRL announced to the world its first-ever CoverBoy, James Charles. Now, COVERGIRL is enthusiastically introducing us to their latest CoverGirl, Nura Afia. Much like James Charles, Nura is a beauty blogger and an online personality with 216,000 subscribers to her YouTube channel but, unlike James Charles, she is Muslim and wears a hajib.
As the Washington Post highlights: Afia will appear in a commercial for CoverGirl, marking the first time a Muslim woman wearing a hijab has been featured in an ad for the brand.
“I’m so excited to be a part of CoverGirl’s new campaign,” Afia said in a statement. “It feels so surreal. Honestly, growing up and being insecure about wearing the hijab I never thought I would see Muslim women represented on such a large scale. It means the world to me and I’m so honored to be a part of this campaign with CoverGirl.”
From a CoverBoy, to a young woman who defines her beauty by pride in herself and her heritage, it is clear COVERGIRL is continuing to lead a conversation of inclusivity. Given the results of last night’s presidential election, we can all hope that others follow COVERGIRL’s lead. #inclusivity #unity @nuralailalov
