“The majority of Americans don’t understand what SPF numbers mean and many may not reapply sunscreen often enough to protect themselves from skin cancer,” reports FastCompany. This is frightening because skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the US, with over 5.4 million new cases each year.
Cue LogicInk: a startup fueled by science that saw this market opportunity, seized it, and is now bringing a whole new meaning to fun in the sun.
LogicInk founder and CEO Carlos Olguin and his team recently developed a UV sticker sensor to both stress and address the importance of safe sun. The company’s colorful and temporary tattoo-like device is the first in a series of wearable products powered by programmable chemistry and biology rather than bulky electronics.
Waterproof and sunscreen friendly, the innovative sensor is chemically designed to react to UV intensity by changing colors. Available in two designs–circular or bars–the user reads their temp tattoo of choice to gauge safe daily cumulative UVB and UVA exposure. Minimal erythemal dose (MED) science, which is the amount of UV light a certain skin tone can be exposed to before burning, is also built into the wearables.
LogicInk UV will soon enter beta testing but does not have a set price point. Rest assured, Olguin shares with FastCompany that he wants to make the sensor accessible to as many people as possible. Sans complicated and higher-cost electronic components, an affordable price point for the sensor is attainable, so keep an eye out.
