L’Oréal’s new Professionnel’s Style My Hair app is an augmented-reality makeover experience that allows change seekers to try different hair colors and styles before stepping foot in a salon. The cosmetic giant partnered with ModiFace—the go-to AR provider—to create an easy-to-use app that has users take a photo, upload it, and then select a hair color and/or style they’d like to try.
Metro explains that the AR technology uses advanced and realistic 3D hair and face simulation, picking up each strand to create an authentic experience. Once users have had the chance to play around, they can store the data and send it to one of L’Oréal’s salons for stylists to analyze. Cool, right?
Wrong. It would be a hit if L’Oréal offered more than one hair type: white.
Out of the 56 different styles to try, not one caters to women of color, Asian women, or mixed races. “Styles are particularly mismatched on the black and Asian woman, in terms of texture, color, and even size,” reports Metro.
