While Instagram is blocked on the mainland of China, rebellious youth navigate their way to bypassing the country’s Great Internet Firewall. Twelve “influencers” have created a global presence, and their influence comes with a hefty price tag. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Chinese brand ambassadors make upwards of US $146,800 (1 million yuan) for a single promotional post on behalf of fashion and beauty brands.

Nars and Dior both learned the importance of cultural context after making missteps in the Chinese market by choosing the “wrong” influencers for mainland Chinese campaigns.  The SCMP helps navigate the world of Chinese influencers.
