As brands and marketers shift more and more money on community building and social media, could a dramatic shift be afoot? Tech futurist Michael Spencer predicts 2018 will be the end of social media as we know it, and this is why:

  1. Teens are aware of behavioral patterns related to mobile and app that border on addiction.
  2. Trust in social media has been lost. The era of trusting news on social media is over, given the number of election-based controversies.
  3. Enthusiasm for next waves of technology is shifting from California to China. Chinese apps have yet to come into their own.
  4. An exodus from social media continues in North America and Europe. Millennials are “over” the pointless digital consumption and GenZ is moving to video-first platforms.

The losers: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

The winners: YouTube and Snapchat.
