A Chinese period drama “延禧攻略,” (“Story of Yanxi Palace”) has taken social media by storm. Set during the Qing dynasty (1644–1912), it was one of 2018’s most-Googled keywords and one of the world’s top TV shows.
Produced by the “Netflix of China” iQiyi, the show broke records with a staggering 700 million views in one day. Consider this:Google is banned in China, so this only represents the reach outside of the country. The show has created trends in fashion and beauty with its unique color palette and extravagant costume design.
The hashtag “Yanxi Colors” is a massive online trend on Weibo and social shopping platform Red. The Forbidden City gift shop has even jumped on the trend with a lipstick release.
