Adaptogens is a term that was coined in 1947 referring to substances that “adapt” to what the body needs to help and protect against various stressors. Adaptogens are a trend that seems to be here to stay, but as demand increases, the harvesting of these ingredients is having a negative impact on the environment. According to Julie Bernier, an Ayurvedic practitioner and founder of True Ayurveda, “As [early as] 2009, 300 of India’s medicinal plants were on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.”

As an industry, we have an obligation to scale up demand for these ingredients in a sustainable manner to protect not only the plants in question but also the whole ecosystem. Brands can make a difference through manufacturing methods and educating consumers.
