Alipay, the e-wallet platform of China’s tech giant Alibaba, announced it would be adding beauty filters to its facial recognition payment system. A new poll by news portal Sina Technology showed that more than 60% of respondents think they look uglier through the next-gen payments method than on a regular camera. Alipay developed into the consumer obsession with digital perfection.
Alipay wrote on Weibo, “We are going to make you look even prettier than with a beauty camera. I bet you’ll be impressed.”
While one would think consumers would be concerned with the convenience and security of the transaction rather than perceived facial “inaccuracy,” beauty filters may prove to be a competitive advantage for payment platforms to attract women.
