Intimate well-being start-up Emjoy has secured $3 million in seed funding led by venture capital firm JME ventures.

WHO: Barcelona-based Emjoy, founded in January 2019 by CEO Andrea Oliver Garcia and Daniel Tamas, is a sexual self-care and empowerment audio app for women. A content library of 150+ audio sessions and sensual stories were developed by its in-house sex therapist and sexual well-being experts. The app provides a holistic solution to reduce pleasure inequality and help its users get in the mood, and has 150K active users, with the company’s main markets being the US and the UK.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS: “My inspiration for founding Emjoy is based on my personal experience and the experiences of many girlfriends of mine. All of us had normalized not climaxing when having sexual encounters,” Andrea Oliver, CEO and co-founder told TechCrunch. “When I began researching this I came across the pleasure gap, with some studies showing that 40% of women have some type of sexual dysfunction. Having been in the VC world and having seen the tremendous success of startups in the mental health and fitness spaces, I was shocked when I could not find an app focusing on sexual wellbeing.”

Samuel Gil, partner at JME Ventures told TechCrunch, “It has been ignored or forgotten for a very long time, but that’s now changing with women being more empowered than ever. Women with sexual wellbeing issues might be reluctant to search for help in a more traditional way due to shame or friction. A digital product is ideal to broaden access to sexual wellbeing solutions.”

Gil added: “It is a nascent category with no clear leaders yet. Emjoy’s vision, ambition, and, above all, execution, so far makes us believe that they are really well-positioned to take the leading position very soon.”
