Summertime always brings with it the opportunity to discover a new publication or two, whether to be read on a beach faraway or lunch hour at the local park. From photographic essays of the ’90s supermodel heyday to practical industry handbooks, here is a collection of pages to flick through, whether on paper, Kindle, or audiobook format.

Aesthetics and Nature: The Appreciation of Natural Beauty and the Environment
Glenn Parsons

We, at BeautyMatter, love ourselves an academic analysis of the medium of beauty—as evidenced by Michael R. Spicher’s ongoing series on aesthetics. Glenn Parsons, a Professor of Philosophy at Toronto Metropolitan University, is unpacking the subject as it relates to philosophy surrounding humanity’s relationship with natural beauty, diving into subject matter such as the picturesque, the aesthetic appreciation of environments and animals, and tying it all into the timely matter of climate change.

Guerlain: An Imperial Icon
Laurence Benaïm

Guerlain’s Bee Bottle, which celebrates its 170th anniversary this year, is an everlasting design that is regularly reinvented in luxurious special editions, be they painted in the artwork of Henri Matisse or a 24-carat-gold and biscuit porcelain garden edition by visual artist Céline Cléron (retailing for a cool €60,000 or $65,781). Designed by master glassmaker Pochet du Courval for the Eau de Cologne Impériale creation made in honor of Empress Eugénie’s marriage to Napoleon III, the bottle is engraved with bees (as a representation of the French empire) and an emperor’s coat of arms. To this day, the creation’s final touches, such as sealing the perfume stoppers with fine thread by hand—a technique known as baudruchage—are done by Guerlain’s “les dames de table” artisans. This publication tracks the history, artistry, and inspirations surrounding the design for a buzzworthy read.

Art of the Lips: Shimmering, Liquified, Bejeweled, and Adorned
Vlada Haggerty

Decorating the lips can come in many forms, from a simple slick of tinted balm to an ombré lip, but Vlada Haggerty’s work really puts the “art” in makeup artistry. From glass lips to optical illusion rose designs, the Ukrainian makeup artist regularly posts stunning creations to her 653K-strong Instagram following. Her work has also been featured in publications such as Vogue India and Refierny 29, and Haggerty was anointed Lip Editor in Chief at Smashbox Cosmetics in 2018. This coffee table book contains over 200 photographs of her work, offering up inspiration for makeup professionals and novices alike.

Tattoo: 1730s–1970s. Henk Schiffmacher’s Private Collection.
Henk Schiffmacher, Noel Daniel

This tome outlines the history of tattooing through the eyes of tattoo artist and historian Henk Schiffmacher, founder of the Schiffmacher Tattoo Heritage—one of the largest collections of tattoo ephemera from across the globe and time periods, be it the indigenous tattooing of the Māori tribe or ancient Asian traditions surrounding the art form. Items range from tattoo drawings to photography and artifacts such as designs from the early pioneers of Western tattooing. Described as “one part history book, one part art book, and one part fascinating memoir,” the publication shows the multifaceted cultural and personal narrative of putting ink to skin.
