BASF Reimagines Floral Actives Through Epigenetics

Rose and orange blossom have historically been among the beauty industry's most recognizable botanicals. Their value has been tied to both their fragrance and cultural appeal, rather than their skincare benefits. 

Now, ingredient suppliers are looking at these flowers differently. Rather than just  incorporating botanical extracts into formulations, companies are using extraction techniques to preserve and concentrate compounds that may improve the look of the skin. This is a significant shift as botanicals such as Damask rose can be expensive due to both the large quantities of flowers required to produce extracts and the care needed to preserve their aromatic and phytochemical components. 

BASF's new Floragenist range highlights how these flowers are being used as targeted cosmetic actives. The company has introduced two ingredients derived from organically cultivated and hand-harvested Moroccan flowers: Floragenist Rose, sourced from Damask rose, and Floragenist Blossom, derived from bitter orange blossom.

Both ingredients are designed to provide epidermal support, including radiance, resilience, and barrier integrity, while preserving the botanical characteristics that have made each flower sought after. 

This introduction also reflects a broader shift towards the use of botanicals in biotechnology and extraction science, rather than relying solely on a plant's natural properties.

Using its extraction technology, AquaGenesis, BASF replaces traditional solvents with coconut water. According to the company, the process preserves the flowers' delicate phytochemicals while increasing the concentration of key bioactive molecules.

Floragenist Rose was developed with epigenetic science in mind, an area of research that examines how environmental factors and behaviors can influence gene expression without altering DNA itself. The ingredient is designed to improve skin radiance by supporting proteins that maintain the skin's structure and light-reflecting properties and is said to promote a smoother, more refined complexion. BASF also believes the ingredient can help address the effects of oxidative stress, including UV exposure, pollution, and other environmental aggressors. 

Similarly, Floragenist Blossom was developed to address both environmental and lifestyle-related stress. The ingredient is designed to reinforce skin resilience by stimulating proteins associated with skin integrity and improving barrier function, while strengthening epidermal cohesion—the process that allows cells of the outer layer of the skin to remain tightly connected.

According to BASF, these mechanisms could help the skin better withstand common stressors, including microbial imbalance or overcleansing. 

The ingredients have not yet been used in product lines and are intended to be adopted by skincare brands. This launch is part of BASF's broader strategy within personal care. Recently, the company has expanded its portfolio with several innovations, including NeoHelix Regenerative, a precision peptide; SkinNexus Collag3n, a bio-identical collagen III fragment; and Micadelva, a citrus fragrance alternative.

These innovations underscore the growing demand for scientifically validated ingredients, highlighting how BASF is using its expertise in floral heritage, sustainability, and epigenetics to move beyond traditional cosmetic formulations and develop performance-driven solutions.
