  • The collection explores themes of identity, independence, and self-expression.
  • Global ingredients meet an Ibiza-inspired Shanghai pop-up experience.

Cross-industry collaborations are becoming increasingly common as brands seek to expand their cultural relevance beyond a single category. The latest example comes from Chinese artistic fragrance house To Summer, which has partnered with Isabel Marant, the luxury French fashion maison.

Founded with the contemporary woman in mind, To Summer draws inspiration from natural landscapes, literature, and art to inform its fragrance offerings, which span candles, body lotions, perfumes, shampoos, and scented wax tablets. The L’Oréal-backed brand is known for its ingredient sourcing and cultural fluency, reinterpreting ancient Eastern aesthetics through modern scent storytelling. Isabel Marant, meanwhile, infuses its designs with Parisian chic, emphasizing authenticity and effortlessness.

According to To Summer, the brand seeks meaningful cross-cultural collaborations rather than partnerships that merely appropriate Chinese traditions. In a previous BeautyMatter FUTURE50 profile, the brand shared its perspective on the industry’s evolution: “Fragrance should be a bridge between cultures—not a costume. Consumers are more perceptive than ever; they know when a brand is building culture and when it’s just borrowing from it.”

Rather than blending Parisian and Chinese perspectives into a singular identity, the collaboration highlights the distinct values and influences of each through contrasting olfactive notes and design elements. The limited-edition collection includes Blue Heat Eau de Parfum and Blue Heat Solid Perfume. Inspired by the “cool girl” archetype across both Eastern and Western cultures, the collaboration seeks to challenge conventional notions of femininity and move beyond rigid cultural boundaries.

The fragrance is inspired by the feeling of “swimming in the ocean under glorious summer heat,” which the brands describe as a metaphor for freedom, movement, and courage. Blue Heat opens with sandalwood before unfolding into a blend of Eastern and Western white florals, including Tunisian neroli and Guangxi jasmine sambac. A base of spicy frankincense adds warmth and depth to the composition.

To celebrate the launch, the brands have created an immersive pop-up experience titled Summer Cabana, open through June 21. Located in Xintiandi, Shanghai, the installation recreates the atmosphere of a sun-drenched Ibiza retreat. Designed to resemble a minimalist fisherman’s hut, the space incorporates natural wood and woven palm thatch to evoke a sense of escape. Inside, visitors can explore a reading corner, browse through vinyl records, and relax among palm-inspired furniture.

The collaboration marks To Summer’s first partnership with a fashion maison, signaling the brand’s ambitions to expand beyond the language of perfumery into broader conversations about culture and lifestyle, while reshaping perceptions of contemporary China.
