Recalls happen, but they are not a common occurrence. Big brands have quality control processes in place to prevent and handle a recall crisis. However, are we beginning to see cracks in the natural beauty category?

There is no shortage of natural beauty founder stories that started in a kitchen or through a product made by hand, and while the stories are quaint and these natural formulations certainly keep overhead to a minimum, there is something to be said for professional formulators and manufacturers.

On April 8 Health Canada issued a recall of Herbivore Pink Cloud Moisture Cream at Sephora due to mold contamination. If you believe a conversation on a r/SkincareAddiction, Herbivore has a larger issue with product stability than this current recall of 800 pieces of product.

The natural beauty trend shows no indication of slowing down. Grand View Research predicts that the global organic personal care industry will reach nearly $25 billion by 2025. This growth has created pressure all the way down the supply chain to the sources of these natural raw ingredients. These natural formulations simply don’t have the same shelf life as traditional formulations, and retailers are going to need to adjust.
