Nestlé Health Science and Nuun, a leader in functional hydration, have entered into an agreement in which Nestlé Health Science will acquire Nuun.
WHO: Nuun was founded in Seattle, Washington, in 2004, pioneering the separation of electrolyte replacement from carbohydrates. Its low-sugar electrolyte tablet revolutionized the sports beverage market. It now has a broad range of effervescent tablets and powders containing additional minerals and vitamins for energy, relaxation, and overall well-being.
Nestlé Health Science, a leader in the science of nutrition, is a globally managed business unit of Nestlé. Its extensive research network provides the foundation for products that empower healthier lives through nutrition. Headquartered in Switzerland, they have more than 7,000 employees around the world, with products available in more than 140 countries.
WHY: The acquisition complements Nestlé Health Science’s existing broad portfolio of active lifestyle nutrition brands with Nuun’s range of clean, low-sugar, effervescent tablets and powders.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS: “Everyday, health-conscious consumers are becoming more aware of how functional hydration products can add to their overall well-being as well as support them during exercise by replacing the minerals that the body loses. That growing awareness is reflected in the steady growth of the category,” said Greg Behar, CEO of Nestlé Health Science. “Nuun is a leader in the fast-growing functional hydration category with its high-quality, clean, plant-based products. We look forward to combining our companies’ expertise to bring Nuun to more people around the world.”
“Nestlé Health Science and Nuun share the same philosophy: nothing is more important than health and well-being,” said Kevin Rutherford, CEO of Nuun. “In joining Nestlé Health Science, Nuun will further its mission of ‘hydration that empowers the world to move more.’ The Nuun team has built an incredible business and now with the reach, expertise and capabilities of Nestlé, I’m confident that together we will grow even more, making people and the planet healthier.”
“We are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished through our partnership with Kevin, the entire team at Nuun and Dan Nordstrom, Nuun’s early lead investor,” said Michael Layman, Managing Director at TSG. “Since our investment in 2017, we have collaborated with Dan to support the company’s expansion into additional product categories and into new channels, which have resulted in a best-in-class portfolio of hydration offerings and significant top-line growth. Today, Nuun is a major force in the healthy hydration space that resonates with all types of consumers, and we are confident it will continue to thrive with the backing of Nestlé Health Science.”
