Derived from the Greek word for excellence and virtue, Areté Beauty was created on the belief that beauty should embody both exceptional performance and conscious responsibility. The brand was founded by Ashley Mooney, an intern-turned-CEO who spent over a decade rising through the ranks of a small, family-owned beauty business. Inside those walls, immersed in the realities of the professional salon industry, Areté Beauty quietly began to take shape.

What started as firsthand exposure to the needs, frustrations, and aspirations of stylists evolved into a larger vision: to create a luxury professional color and care brand rooted in conscious creation, elevated performance, and modern craftsmanship.

Without legacy conglomerate backing or celebrity attachment, Areté Beauty was built from the inside out. Shaped by years of operational experience, product development, education, and close relationships with the professional community it serves.

Today, what began as a concept nurtured within a family-owned business has evolved into one of professional beauty’s emerging conscious luxury brands, proving that artistry, performance, and responsibility can coexist without compromise

Insights: Ashley Mooney, Founder + CEO

Why now and why you?

The professional beauty industry is at an inflection point. Salons and stylists are demanding more from the brands they partner with, seeking products that deliver exceptional performance while aligning with evolving expectations around ingredient integrity, sustainability, transparency, and purpose. At the same time, luxury consumers are increasingly looking for brands that reflect their values without sacrificing efficacy or experience.

Areté Beauty exists at the intersection of these shifts. In just two years, the brand has expanded into more than 3,000 salons across North America, proving that professional artists are ready to embrace a more conscious vision of luxury beauty. With significant distribution expansion planned for fall 2026, Areté Beauty is moving from emerging challenger to influential category leader at a moment when the industry is actively redefining what luxury, performance, and responsibility should look like.

Why Us? Areté Beauty was built differently.

Founded by an intern-turned-CEO who spent over a decade immersed in the realities of the professional salon industry, the brand was built on a community-first approach and from a deep understanding of what stylists, salon owners, and consumers were missing. Rather than following trends, Areté Beauty was designed around a simple belief: Beauty should never require a compromise between performance, wellness, sustainability, or aesthetic artistry.

Today, that vision is expressed through a complete ecosystem of professional color, care, and styling products, supported by ethical sourcing practices, conscious formulation standards, luxury design, and measurable sustainability commitments. As a certified partner of Positive Luxury, Areté Beauty is helping establish a new standard for what modern luxury beauty can be.

While many brands talk about the future of beauty, Areté Beauty is actively building it. The brand's rapid adoption, differentiated point of view, and commitment to proving that conscious luxury can scale make it uniquely positioned to represent the next generation of professional beauty.

What fuels your competitive advantage?

Areté Beauty's competitive advantage is rooted in the intersection of professional credibility and conscious luxury brand-world building.

Unlike many emerging beauty brands, Areté Beauty was not created by marketers looking to enter the salon industry. It was built by industry operators who spent years working alongside salon professionals, understanding the realities of the chair, the backbar, and the business of beauty. This foundation allows us to create products, education, and experiences that solve real needs rather than chase trends.

Our advantage is further strengthened by a unique approach to conscious luxury. Our rigorous formulation philosophy, responsible sourcing practices, and commitment to transparency, have created a framework that allows salons and consumers to make more informed choices without sacrificing performance or artistry.

At the product level, we combine advanced formulation science, globally sourced botanical ingredients, and Italian manufacturing expertise to deliver professional results that rival legacy brands while reflecting modern expectations around wellness and sustainability.

As the industry continues to evolve, we believe our ability to unite performance, purpose, and professional credibility positions Areté Beauty to lead a new generation of conscious luxury brands.

What’s your proudest accomplishment to date?

In just two years, the Areté Beauty community has grown into more than 3,000 salons across the United States and Canada. The trust of professional artists is something we never take for granted, and their adoption of the brand validates that the industry is ready for a more conscious and transparent future.

As we have built the world of Areté Beauty, stylists and their salon spaces have become the stars and moon illuminating our sky. They are the custodians of our conscious universe, translating our philosophy into tangible experiences that clients can see, touch, and feel. Through every consultation, color service, and ritual, they bring our vision of beauty, wellness, and conscious creation to life, both online and behind the chair.

We are equally proud of the culture and standards we have built behind the brand from the start. From achieving certification with Positive Luxury and winning Best Sustainable/Eco-Friendly Line, we have worked to create meaningful accountability around sustainability, formulation integrity, and ethical business practices.

Perhaps most importantly, we are proud that Areté Beauty was built on the belief that every dollar spent is a vote for the kind of world we want to create. From the beginning, we set out to prove that profit and purpose are not competing priorities but powerful partners capable of driving meaningful change. Founded by an intern-turned-CEO and supported by a small family office that believed in the vision, the brand has grown through conviction, persistence, and a commitment to serving the professional community first.

What is the one thing you wish someone had told you?

Your intuition is just as important as your data.

Early in my career, I believed every decision needed to be justified by overwhelming evidence. Over time, I learned that some of the most important opportunities appear long before the data can validate them. Data is essential, but it is inherently backward-looking. It tells you what has happened. Intuition helps you imagine what could happen.

Building a brand, leading people, and creating something new often requires making decisions with incomplete information. The lesson I wish I had learned sooner is that intuition is not the opposite of intelligence; it is intelligence informed by experience. The most powerful decisions come from respecting both.

"Your intuition is just as important as your data."
By Ashley Mooney, Founder + CEO, Areté Beauty

What would you tell your past self before starting this journey?

The journey is the reward.

Early on, I believed fulfillment would come from achieving the next milestone, launching the next initiative, or reaching the next goal. After spending 14 years scaling from intern to CEO within the same company and leading a financial transaction, I became accustomed to measuring success through achievement and forward progress.

What I've learned is that milestones are fleeting. The celebration lasts a moment, and then it's on to the next challenge. The real reward is not the destination but the privilege of building something meaningful alongside people you admire, solving problems worth solving, and creating something that leaves a positive impact on others.

Looking back, the moments I cherish most are not the accomplishments themselves but the people, lessons, and experiences that made them possible.

What does success look like in the next 3-5 years?

Success for Areté Beauty is not simply becoming a larger brand; it's helping redefine what success looks like within professional beauty and beyond.

Over the next 3-5 years, we hope to prove that conscious luxury is not a niche but the future. We envision a thriving global community of salons, artists, and consumers who no longer feel forced to choose between performance, wellness, sustainability, ethics, and profitability.

Success means continuing to raise the standard for what professional beauty brands can be through responsible sourcing, transparent business practices, elevated product innovation, and meaningful partnerships that create value throughout the supply chain.

We also hope to use our platform to empower salon professionals and help shape a more conscious industry. If, five years from now, more brands are investing in sustainability, transparency, ingredient integrity, and the well-being of the professional community because the market demands it, we will consider that a meaningful contribution.

Most importantly, success means staying true to the principles that inspired Areté Beauty from the beginning. Growth is important, but only if it allows us to create greater positive impact for our community, our industry, and the world around us.

What's one industry trend that is overhyped, and what's being overlooked?

Overhyped: endless product launches and trend-driven innovation. The beauty industry has become incredibly efficient at creating newness. New ingredients, new formats, new aesthetics, and new trends emerge almost daily. While innovation is essential, we've reached a point where many launches are solving marketing challenges rather than consumer needs.

Consumers and professionals are increasingly overwhelmed by choice. More products do not necessarily create more value, and novelty alone is becoming a less sustainable growth strategy. The brands that endure will be those that know not only what to create, but what not to create.

Overlooked: trust and taste. In an era of unlimited information, trust has become one of the most valuable currencies a brand can possess. Consumers are looking beyond claims and marketing language to understand how products are made, where ingredients come from, how companies operate, and whether brands genuinely align with their values.

In truth, I believe one of the most important shifts happening in beauty today is the rise of science-backed and clinically validated products. While many view this as a formulation trend, I think what's really driving it is something deeper: a search for trust.

Consumers are living in an era of unprecedented choice and information. They are exposed to thousands of products, claims, influencers, and marketing messages every day. In that environment, science offers something increasingly valuable: credibility. Science feels concrete. It feels measurable. It feels objective. For many consumers, clinical studies, efficacy data, and scientific language provide a sense of certainty in a category that has historically relied heavily on aspiration and storytelling.

But I don't believe consumers are abandoning brand stories or emotional connection. Rather, they're asking brands to earn the right to tell those stories. Trust has become the foundation upon which modern beauty brands are built.

Equally overlooked is taste. Not taste as a trend, but taste as a point of view. The brands shaping the future of beauty are not simply responding to culture; they are helping create it. They act as tastemakers, curators, and editors, bringing clarity to an increasingly crowded marketplace. In a world driven by algorithms and endless choice, consumers are looking for brands that help them discover what is worth their attention.

The brands that will define the next decade of beauty won't be the fastest to launch or the loudest to market. They'll be the ones that earn trust through transparency and consistency while cultivating a distinctive point of view that inspires loyalty, community, and aspiration. As an industry, we spend a great deal of time discussing innovation but not nearly enough time discussing trust, taste, and the responsibility that comes with both.

How do you think the industry needs to evolve?

The industry needs fewer brands trying to be everything to everyone and more brands willing to stand for something. In an age of AI, algorithms, optimization, and trend cycles, many brands are becoming increasingly similar. The future belongs to companies with a distinct point of view, strong taste, and the courage to build for a specific audience rather than chasing mass appeal. The most influential brands of the next decade that are here to stay won't win because they're for everyone. They'll win because they mean something to someone.

If you could wave a magic wand, what one wish would you make for your business?

If I could wave a magic wand, I would help every beauty professional fully recognize the value of their craft. Hairdressers do far more than color hair, cut hair, or recommend products. They build confidence, foster human connection, create moments of physical and emotional transformation, and often serve as trusted pillars within their communities. Yet many still undervalue both the impact they have on people's lives and the businesses they have the potential to build.

As AI continues to reshape industries around the world, I believe professional beauty occupies a uniquely human space. While technology will undoubtedly change how we work, the art of helping someone feel seen, understood, and transformed cannot be automated. The salon remains one of the last truly personal experiences where creativity, craftsmanship, trust, and human connection converge to change how someone sees themselves from the inside out.

If Areté Beauty can play even a small role in elevating the profession, increasing prosperity behind the chair, and inspiring more artists to see themselves as entrepreneurs, educators, and leaders, that would be an extraordinary success. The beauty industry becomes stronger when the professionals at its center thrive.
