Dr. Barbara Sturm

Dr. Barbara Sturm skincare adds a star-powered investor to the ranks of its backers. Media mogul Oprah Winfrey invested an undisclosed amount into the brand.

WHO: Barbara Sturm Molecular Cosmetics is a doctor-led skincare brand based in Düsseldorf, Germany. Established in 2011, the company specializes in nonsurgical skin rejuvenation launching the Dr. Barbara Sturm skincare brand on Net-a-Porter in 2014.The brand has retail distribution via Nordstrom, Sephora, Bluemercury, Violet Grey, and Goop, and recently opened two new spas in New York—one uptown on Madison Avenue and one downtown in SoHo.

WHY: Oprah called Sturm directly with an offer to invest after being introduced to the brand by Stella McCartney.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS: “Oprah loving the products and coming into our business is a big honor and testament to the brand and our anti-inflammatory, skin barrier-strengthening philosophy,” Dr. Sturm said in a statement. “It also gives us access to a wider audience to bring free science-backed skin education to everyone.”

“It was Stella McCartney actually,” Winfrey said to a live audience at Hearst Tower in New York City. “She sent me some of the [Dr. Barbara Sturm] products and I was like, ‘What is this? What is this?’ And I love it so much that I then called up Dr. Barbara Sturm, and said ‘I want to invest in your company.’ And I have never done that before. Ever. So, that’s how good the products are.”
