Package Free has raised its first capital since launching in 2017, with $4.5 million in seed funding led by Primary Ventures.

WHO: Lauren Singer popularized the zero-waste movement though her blog Trash Is For Tossers. Singer founded Package Free in 2017 as a pop-up shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for sustainable CPG brands that transitioned into a permanent retail space. The retailer sells brands that use all-natural ingredients and are plastic free. They enforce strict guidelines and a three-strike rule on shipments that arrive packed with plastic.

WHY: Package Free intends to deploy the capital to create its own sustainable CPG products and make hires in marketing.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS: “We know it’s completely possible to do these things without plastic, it’s just not the norm now,” Singer said to Techcrunch. “So we’re trying to change the foundational benchmarks of what it means to package sustainably. I truly believe that the burden of waste should never fall on the consumer. It should fall on the manufacturer first, and then the reseller.”
