Carnaby Street is one of the world's most iconic shopping destinations, renowned for its fashion, music, and cultural heritage. Long synonymous with individuality and self-expression, the London landmark now adds another beauty destination to its retail mix: Sephora.
The retailer is leveling up its UK strategy with the opening of a boutique concept store on Carnaby Street, marking an important milestone in its growth plans. Sephora introduced the new format after strong demand from the UK beauty community for more central London locations, according to Sarah Boyd, Managing Director of Sephora UK.
Spanning 2,691 square feet—compared to the average 5,000-square-foot-plus store—the smaller boutique format is designed to offer a more intimate shopping experience in a high-street setting, with a streamlined product assortment and innovative store design. The concept also positions Sephora to compete more directly with local favorites Boots and Ulta Beauty–owned SpaceNK, which have an established presence across the UK and are beloved by UK consumers.
The UK's first Sephora boutique swaps endless assortment for thoughtful curation, offering a more tightly edited shopping experience than a traditional Sephora store. Designed to feel distinct to the city of London and integrated into how UK consumers shop today, Boyd affirmed in a press release, "Whether they're discovering a new brand during their lunch break, browsing with friends at the weekend or looking for personalised beauty advice before an evening out, we've created a space that delivers everything people love about Sephora in a format that feels effortless, inspiring, and perfectly suited to the rhythm of city life."
Customers have access to a selection of fan-favorite brands and exclusive in-store access to Only At Sephora brands, including rhode, Haus Labs, and Makeup By Mario, alongside Sephora's Hot On Social assortment featuring brands such as Tatcha and Tarte, as well as the retailer's own Sephora Collection. The Carnaby Street location offers similar services to those offered at a Sephora flagship; the difference is the intimate, dedicated spaces for the personalized beauty services and one-on-one consultations.
What sets the store apart most is its elevated feel. Rather than navigating crowded aisles or being interrupted while seeking product recommendations, the boutique features a more minimalist aesthetic. It's not just about reducing product noise; it's about creating a more comfortable consultation experience, too. The store's back corner features a sleek, white, semi-enclosed nook complete with mirrors, stools, and counter space, giving customers a more private setting to work with a Beauty Advisor. It feels more exclusive than Sephora's traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Adorned with plants and color-coated product assortments throughout, the store’s entire layout feels intentionally refined.
Inside, Sephora is also equipping its Beauty Advisors with Beauty Scan technology, a new advanced lens that attaches to their phones to analyze customers' skin, providing insights into skin tone, texture, and other characteristics. The technology is designed to deliver more tailored skincare recommendations and foundation matching, highlighting the retailer's continued investment in personalized beauty experiences.
The Carnaby Street opening comes as Sephora continues its regional expansion across the UK. Although the retailer only reentered the market in 2023 after exiting its physical retail business there in 2005, it's clear the company is serious about rebuilding its presence and winning over UK shoppers. Sephora now expects to operate 20 stores by the end of 2026. The Carnaby Street boutique marked its 15th UK location, with a second boutique opening at Old Spitalfields Market at the end of July.
