Business of Fashion reported that after just one year in business, the sports-themed sex shop Contact Sports has laid off staff and is selling off the remaining inventory.WHO: Opened in March 2023 in New York's Soho neighborhood, Contact Sports was a relaxed, athletic-themed storefront by Ringo Studio that made going to a sex shop fun and approachable. The 700-square-foot space was designed to resemble a 1970s locker room with paneled cubbyholes that displayed vibrators, body wax candles, and other sex accessories. The concept was founded by Chelsea and Jason Kerznerand and replaced the Babeland store, which had been in the space for decades but closed during the pandemic.WHY: The storefront has been boarded up and the wall of red roses that once greeted shoppers was replaced by an announcement: “The Locker Room will be closing for now. Let’s just say we pulled something and need some time to recover.” The founders told BOF they decided to focus attention and resources on their other businesses, including Magic Molecule, a skincare label that launched a month before Contact Sports.DETAILS:Sexual wellness retailer Contact Sports shuts down. All employees were laid off, with some joining Magic Molecule’s staff. The company did not discount their merchandise before shuttering and is selling through inventory.
