The last 12 months have been a crazy ride with tragic losses and a tumultuous political environment. I thought I’d share a subject that has me shaking my head and laughing. The art industry currently has two grown men in a full-blown color war. And we think the beauty industry is competitive?

Just to bring you up to speed on the #ShareTheBlack movement:

July 2014 – Anish Kapoor signed a deal with NanoSystems to have the exclusive rights for the artistic use of the pigment called Vantablack. The British company developed it for use on stealth jets, and it is said to absorb about 99.965% of light. Other artists are up in arms that the British-Indian sculptor has the sole rights to use the blackest black. #ShareTheBlack

November 2016 – In retaliation artist Stuart Semple launched new color called PINK. The pigment was supposedly developed over ten years and is described as the world’s “pinkest pink,” and was reportedly developed over a decade with global paint labs. It is available to anyone for £3.99unless you’re Anish Kapoor. Buyers must ensure at checkout that the pigment won’t get into the hands of Anish Kapoor.

December 2016 – Semple upped the ante in the color war with Kapoor by launching the world’s “glitteriest glitter” named Diamond Dust. Using the highest-grade glass possible means the glitter has 99.8% clarity. Again, the glitter, which is currently sold out, is available to anyone for £7.99, except Anish Kapoor.

Stuart Semple told Dazed, “Basically Anish Kapoor still has the exclusive rights to the world’s blackest black, he’s still being a big meanie, so I wanted to up the ante a bit and keep the pressure up on him to share it with the community!”

Somehow Anish has “illegally got his hands on the world’s pinkest paint, ” but the “glitteriest glitter” still alludes him. Stay tuned for the next installment of the color wars.
