Necessity is the mother of invention, as the saying goes. Faced with the challenge of treating her infant son's eczema with steroids and other medicated creams, which caused an adverse reaction on her hands, Raana Kashani Gregg began her search for a solution.

Trial and error followed, but none of her hacks worked. Latex gloves smeared and wasted the prescription creams, while silicone brushes were too flexible to rub the product into the skin effectively. Her concern about toxicity, safety, and waste spurred her inner inventor to dig deeper to solve the problem.

As an inventor at heart, accepting the status quo was not an option for Kashani Gregg. An inventor’s view of the world is rarely through the lens of what is, but rather what could be. This perspective led to her eureka moment: fingers are a terrible way to apply products to the skin—not just for medicated ointments, but also other skincare products and makeup.

Fingers needlessly absorb product, causing waste, while the small surface area makes applying some products inefficient and time-consuming. Even clean fingers can introduce contaminants to skincare products, causing active ingredients to degenerate and rendering them less effective.

Kashani Gregg says of her vision, "I wanted a tool that combined the clean, washable, and soft material of a silicone brush with the firmness, efficiency, and control of my own fingers.”

Two years of collaboration, extensive testing, and iterations with an industrial designer followed, and Clean Skin Labs launched with the mission of creating unique solutions to everyday problems. The first invention to launch is LUNAESCENT, a multifunctional tool for efficiently applying beauty products, eliminating absorption, waste, and mess with the added benefits of massaging, depuffing, and exfoliating.

“The final design of LUNAESCENT is simple but ingenious and incorporates a form and function approach that also perfects the experience and delivers the benefits of gua sha tools and jade rollers,” reveals Kashani Gregg.

LUNAESCENT’s design consists of an ergonomic handle with a stable head that pivots a perfect 10 degrees, allowing the silicone pad to glide over skin and hard-to-reach areas.

The device was created with two different platinum-grade silicone pads: smooth for general skincare application and textured for massaging, depuffing, and gentle exfoliation. The pads can be frozen to deliver a cryo experience for depuffing or heated to enhance product absorption. The pads are fully removable, washable, and reusable.

While the notion of applying skincare with a beauty tool may have seemed excessive a few years ago, in our “new normal,” increased attention to hygiene, preventing waste, and making every drop of expensive skincare products count, justifies investment in this innovative new tool.
