The United Nations, through the World Health Organization, issued a rallying cry to creators around the globe, enlisting their skills in developing shareable content in all forms to help prevent the coronavirus from spreading.
“We are in an unprecedented situation and the normal rules no longer apply. We cannot resort to the usual tools in such unusual times. The creativity of the responses must match the unique nature of this crisis — the magnitude of the responses must match its scale,” said UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.
Creatives around the globe responded to the open brief resulting in 17,000 submissions. Without a great way to see this number of submissions quickly and everywhere, Unsplash stepped in with a solution. They have turned Unsplash into a visual Public Service Announcement System for the UN and set the goal of getting the visuals seen by 1 billion people in the next 30 days.
“By reaching out to creatives around the world, we hope to inspire creators, influencers, talent, networks, media owners [and more] who can take these key messages and bring their own magic to them—a creative twist, a cultural quirk, an interpretation which helps amplify them to audiences we are not yet reaching,” said Dawda Jobarteh, Global Head of the SDG Strategy Hub, United Nations.
