For a long time, the beauty and wellness industry has increasingly come under scrutiny for its significant environmental impact. As global awareness of climate change and environmental degradation grows, so too does the recognition of the beauty industry's contribution to these issues. From the sourcing of raw materials to the manufacturing processes, packaging, and distribution, the beauty sector’s operations have far-reaching consequences on the planet. The industry’s reliance on plastic packaging for example, is one of the most glaring issues. Despite efforts to reduce plastic use, and although a decently sized number of brands are using more eco-friendly materials, recent research shows that in the UK alone, households throw away no less than 100 billion pieces of packaging every year, much of which ends up in landfills or the oceans. Moreover, the extraction of natural ingredients, such as palm oil, mica, and certain plant extracts, often leads to deforestation, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss. Also, the energy-intensive manufacturing processes and the carbon emissions from global supply chains further exacerbate the industry’s environmental footprint. In response to these challenges, governments around the world are increasingly taking actions by asserting certain policies. They’re recognizing that voluntary corporate efforts alone are insufficient to address the scale of the problem, and are therefore launching initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of various industries, including beauty.
