The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has become ground zero for health, beauty, and wellness tech launches. Retailers, investors, and strategics kick off the year in Las Vegas scouting for the next generation of technology breakthroughs. Big brands and start-ups use this conference as a platform to show off their latest innovations in a technology context.

This year was different: held from January 11-14, it was the first all-virtual CES, making history as the largest digital tech event, with 2,000 companies, including almost 700 start-ups from 37 countries, launching products.

Here are the innovations that need to be on your radar in 2021:

The virtual, avatar-led experience offered a “behind the scenes” look at the reinvention of the consumer experience through products and services that improve everyday life while helping to create a better future for society and the planet.

The P&G LifeLab highlighted innovations including the Oral-B iO, Dawn Powerwash Febreze Fade Defy Plug Air Freshener, Microban 24, EC30, Cascade, and Bounty, as well as sustainability initiatives including 50L Home and Holy Grail. The immersive experience highlighted inclusive design and human-centered technologies that connect and improve life in simple and meaningful ways while helping to solve pressing global challenges, including water scarcity, waste, and climate change.

Amorepacific’s Lip Factory by Color Tailor: Amorepacific was named a CES 2021 Innovation Award Honoree for its customized lip makeup manufacturing technology. The integrated online-offline lip makeup manufacturing system boasts the ability to create over 2,000 lip color shades. It utilizes a deep-learning algorithm to analyze facial features and an AI-based mobile application called “Color Tailor” to recommend and customize lip colors. The technology is currently available at the Amorepacific Seongsu flagship store in Seoul, Korea. The company plans to further enhance the algorithm and improve access and convenience for users in the future, and the technology will be used across the Amorepacific brand portfolio.

The device is $299 and is available for limited pre-sales, only in the US market and will be launched worldwide by September 2021.

Water Saver: L’Oréal teamed up with Gjosa, a Swiss environmental innovation company, to create this new haircare innovation to manage water consumption at home and in the salon. Using technology to reinvent the hair washing and rinsing experience, Water Saver combines a micronization technology with a shower head cartridge containing haircare products designed by Kérastase and L’Oréal Professionnel to cut water usage by 80%.

The patented Cloud Cleansing approach uses micronized haircare formulas specially designed for Water Saver that are infused directly in the water stream, promoting better product distribution and absorption, as well as improved efficiency. The result is a shower head that divides the flow of water to create 10 times smaller droplets. Then, they are accelerated for faster and more effective rinsing. The system also features a data dashboard that allows salon professionals to monitor their water and energy consumption and savings.

The L’Oréal Water Saver haircare experience is available now in select L’Oréal salons in New York and Paris. A global rollout is planned now through 2023, and the new system is expected to be in 10,000 salons in the next few years. An at-home shower device will be launched at a later date.
