Key Takeaways:

  • Fragrance led much of the beauty industry’s growth, with mass sales up 15% and units up 7%.
  • Prestige skincare grew 9%, fueled by 16% gains in body and sun care.
  • Hair serums surged nearly 60%, highlighting a demand for targeted, treatment-led products in haircare.

In the first half of 2026, the US beauty industry saw strong growth across all price tiers. This momentum was driven by high demand for fragrance, skincare, and self-care products that deliver both emotional and functional value, continuing a trend from Q1 when mass and prestige beauty grew at nearly the same rate for the first time in five years. Despite consumer confidence in general falling to an all-time low in recent months, the industry is demonstrating immense resilience

According to research by Circana, prestige retail dollar sales grew +7% to $17.1 billion in the first six months of the year. In comparison, beauty sales in mass retail increased by 7% to $39.2 billion, with unit demand remaining positive on both sides.

“Beauty continues to benefit from consumers' willingness to shop across price tiers, selectively investing in products that deliver the strongest emotional and functional value," said Larissa Jensen, Senior Vice President and global beauty industry advisor at Circana, in a statement. "Fragrance remains a key avenue for affordable luxury and self-expression, while skincare is benefiting from consumers' growing focus on whole body wellness, preventative treatments, and daily rituals."

Fragrance

  • Fragrance was the fastest-growing beauty category, with sales increasing +15% and units rising +7% in mass retail
  • Prestige fragrance grew +6%, driven mainly by premiumization
  • Average prices rose +5%, although unit sales remained flat
  • Consumers prefer higher-concentration fragrance formats, with eau de parfums and perfumes showing double-digit growth
  • Luxury fragrance increased both by dollar and unit sales, largely due to women’s fragrance

Skincare

  • Skincare was the fastest-growing category in prestige beauty, with sales up 9% and units up double digits
  • Bodycare and suncare led prestige retail growth at +16%, particularly with body cleansers, lotions, deodorants, and suncare increasing +19%
  • In mass retail, skincare outperformed the overall mass beauty market

Makeup

  • Makeup fell behind both skincare and fragrance
  • Makeup increased +3% in prestige retail, despite slightly slower unit demand.
  • Face makeup, specifically bronzer and blush, saw double-digit gains
  • Lip liner continued its momentum as the fastest-growing segment in makeup
  • Sales increased +5% in mass retail
  • Trend-driven products proved to sell well in prestige makeup, including combination products, highlighting experimentation and innovation as being of interest to consumers

Haircare

  • Hair care sales increased +11%, with units growing +8%
  • Hair treatments were the category’s primary growth in prestige retail
  • Hair serums increased by nearly +60%, with masks, oils, leave-in treatments, and scalp-focused products also having healthy gains
  • In mass retail, haircare dollar sales increased by 7%, reflecting softer results; unit sales also dipped
  • Shampoo and conditioner combo packs generated double-digit growth in both dollars and units

“Looking ahead, beauty industry growth will continue to be shaped by strong consumer engagement in key segments alongside the ongoing evolution of how consumers shop,” said Jensen. “As e-commerce and social platforms play a larger role in discovery and purchase, brands that create seamless paths from inspiration to transaction will be best positioned to capture future growth.”
