Artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) beauty and fashion tech solutions provider Perfect Corp released its Beauty and Fashion Tech Trends Around the World report. The report analyzes big data from Perfect Corp.'s YouCam suite of apps, with over 1 billion downloads globally. The report focuses on user data sourced from nine key regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and China.

As personalization becomes a top priority for beauty and fashion shoppers, AR-powered virtual try-on experiences have emerged as an essential component of the customer journey, helping consumers experience products in seconds. In the first half of 2022, Perfect Corp. registered over 3 billion beauty and fashion virtual try-ons in the YouCam apps community, which clearly indicates consumer adoption.

Lip Trends

  • In the first half of 2022 alone, there were over 800 million lip color try-ons in the YouCam Makeup app. Bright cranberry pink landed the #1 spot as the most popular lip color around the globe, with a vibrant wild strawberry pink shade and classic petal pink emerging as some of the most tried-on shades globally. Rich, seasonal red tones like terracotta red and red ribbon are also placed in the top five most popular lip colors worldwide.
  • In Q1 2022 and Q2 2022, trending lip colors, like muted red and dusty rose, increased in popularity across many markets driven by minimalist makeup routines.
  • This preference towards natural makeup is also reflected in lip texture trends, as sheer lip color finishes emerged as the most popular lip color finish across most markets. Sheer lip color provides subtle shine and light nourishment to the lips, making it the perfect choice for consumers who prefer more natural makeup looks. This represents a key shift in consumer preferences post-pandemic, as pre-pandemic consumers favored heavier matte formulas.
  • Consumers at NARS Cosmetics tried on an average of 27 shades using the virtual try-on tool on their website, ultimately driving a 300% increase in conversion rate.

Eye Trends

  • In the first half of 2022, there were over 1.3 billion eye makeup try-ons in YouCam apps.
  • According to YouCam data, trying on different eyebrow shapes and filters received the most engagement, with +480MM try-ons in the first half of 2022, representing 32% of try-ons, followed by eyelashes (22%), eye liner (15%), eye color (13%), and fake eyelashes (7%).
  • Benefit Cosmetics noted a number of benefits after deploying its Perfect Corp.-powered Brow Try-On solution across various channels. The brand reported a 101% increase in time-on-site, 113% increase in conversion rate from visitors to its site, and 20% increase in product add-to-cart.

"We are excited to share our next trend report with the beauty and fashion industries, and know that these insights will help brands better understand consumer preferences and needs as we move into the retail season ahead," said Perfect Corp. founder and CEO Alice Chang. "By leveraging the big data and technology insights provided by Perfect Corp.'s YouCam apps community, brands can fine-tune their customer journeys to drive maximum impact and engagement."
