Microbiome-friendly skincare has been creating a buzz in the beauty industry. In 2022, the global microbiome skincare product market was valued at $381.5 million, with this figure expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.9%, climbing to $835.2 million by 2030. The adoption of skincare products specifically targeting the microbiome has increased heavily among the everyday consumer, with 50% of US adult consumers stating they are interested in trying such products.By definition, the skin microbiome refers to "the diverse community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that inhabit the skin's surface." The appeal lies in formulations that aim to preserve a balanced microbiome, resulting in a healthier and firmer skin barrier. These skincare solutions achieve this by incorporating prebiotics and probiotics into formulations containing meticulously studied ingredients. Microbiome-friendly products address concerns such as inflammation, sensitivity, and overall skin imbalances. Consequently, brands such as You’re Looking Well, Gallinée, and Cultured Biome that focus on skincare formulations centered around the skin microbiome are experiencing a surge in demand, reflecting a shift in consumer preferences towards a more holistic and scientifically driven approach to skincare. In collaboration with Jennifer Carlsson, Kind to Biome conducted an analysis on Instagram to identify the top microbiome-friendly brands.
